| Keswick, situated on the shores
of Derwentwater and surrounded by the Northern fells
of the Lake District, is a historic market town famed
by the invention of the modern day pencil, being the
home of poets Southey, Coleridge and Wordsworth and
also nestling beneath one of the oldest mountains in
Europe (Skiddaw).
Restaurants and bars are numerous so you are spoilt
for choice for what to eat. The recently modernised
Theatre by the Lake shows professional productions throughout
the year and afterwards you could take a launch around
the lake to enjoy the impressive views of Borrowdale.
You may choose to wander through the beautiful award
winning parks, visit the Alhambra cinema, swim in the
pool or enjoy a game of golf, surrounded by some of
the most spectacular scenery in England.
The Keswick area is reknown for its walks; either take
in the views around Derwentwater, enjoy the nature of
the disused railway line to St.Johns in the Vale, or
hike over the amazing mountains of Helvellyn, Scafell
Pike, or Blencathra; there is plenty of choice for all
abilities.
St.Johns in the Vale is one of the most stunning valleys
in the Northern Lake District. Though only 2 miles from
Keswick, the area is tranquil and unspoilt with stunning
views of Blencathra and the Helvellyn range.
The Northern Lakes have a fascinating history. Between
St.Johns in the Vale and Keswick is the ancient Castlerigg
Stone Circle, one of the best preserved monuments in
Northern England.
